A full service continuing care retirement community in Asheville

From humble beginnings to a full service, state-of-the-art retirement community.

It all began in 1955 with a vision of the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina and several generous donations. At first Deerfield was a small complex surrounded by 30 acres of farmland a few miles south of downtown Asheville, the famed Biltmore Estate and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Today our campus has blossomed into a 125-acre full-service retirement community featuring Asheville-inspired craftsman-style architecture with quaint red roofs, charming stonework and tree-shaded lanes meandering through the walkable community. With our latest expansion complete, retirement options are better than ever, with 83 independent living apartments, 20 assisted living suites and 14 skilled nursing residences along with all new or newly renovated common areas.

Independent Living

Independent retirement living options include 77 cottages, 8 villas and a variety of apartments in Timson, Henry and Tuton Halls.

Our cottages are especially designed for active senior living and range in size from smaller residences in the original St. Giles neighborhood to the newer, larger cottages built during the expansion in the '90s.

Our villas offer a unique alternative for independent seniors. These buildings are connected at the garage wall. They have around 1600-1650 square feet of living space, with the option of adding additional square footage for a great room.

Cluster homes, found in the St. Giles neighborhood, are separate residences with outside entrances clustered in one of three buildings. The cluster homes have been newly refurbished to complement the craftsman-style look of the newer Deerfield community and feature many of the same amenities as our cottages and villas.

Our independent living apartments range in square footage from 800 to 2517, with 10 different floor plans. All apartment buildings are accessible to the community center and the new health and wellness center through enclosed connectors.

Assisted Living

With our latest expansion complete, all of Haden Hall’s Assisted Living facilities are new or newly renovated and feature deluxe amenities you won’t find anywhere else, including our new 4th floor dining room overlooking Asheville’s Biltmore Estate and spectacular long range views of the western North Carolina mountains.

Each of the Haden Hall Assisted Living suites features a living room, a bedroom, an efficiency kitchen with refrigerator, sink and microwave oven, a fully handicapped-accessible bathroom and nine foot ceilings. Residents bring their own belongings such as furniture, pictures and plants.

Skilled Nursing

Our Skilled Nursing Center Built is built in an innovative cluster design with private rooms grouped in neighborhoods that contain comfortable sitting areas, living rooms and common spaces. With the addition of 14 spacious rooms for short-term recuperative stays in our new wing, skilled nursing now has a 62 resident capacity. Residential in design and décor, the skilled nursing center is perfect for residents who require more intensive care, provided 24 hours a day. Three meals a day are provided to skilled nursing residents.

To assure quality care, all areas of Health Services are under the direct supervision and responsibility of a licensed administrator, the Director of Health Care Services, and the Medical Director, a licensed physician.

Life Care offers security and peace of mind

Life Care offers the security of knowing your financial assets are protected and preserved for you and your family, and you’ll never have to say good-bye to home and friends should your health care needs change. The Life Care concept offers our residents unique health care benefits, as well as significant financial advantages and security. The Life Care benefit assures the availability of long-term nursing care or assisted living in the on-site Health Center at the same monthly rate of an independent living apartment or cottage. The resident has to pay extra only for the additional two meals per day during their stay in any level of care in our Health Center, and any ancillary health care services not included in the Monthly Fee. Upgraded accommodations in health care are available at an additional charge.

A Vibrant, Active Lifestyle

Our residents enjoy a wide variety of activities on campus such as hiking, croquet, billiards, cards, a computer lab, a library and various resident-organized clubs. Our Wellness Center features “Riverwalk” offering a café and deli with flexible dining hours, as well as an arts studio, a fiber arts studio, a pottery kiln, classrooms, and expanded weight and aerobics facilities adjoining the Aquatic Center. The Aquatic Center offers aerobics classes or if you like, swim at your own pace. Here, you’ll find the perfect independent lifestyle that suits you.

A Community of Faith

We are blessed to be one of the few retirement communities in the nation that includes a free-standing chapel on its campus with a chaplain on staff – actually, two! Our chaplains are ordained clergy with special training in ministering to seniors, and are there to support and affirm our residents’ spiritual commitments. We are very proud of our innovative, state-of-the-art Health Care Chapel attached to our Health Care Center. Groundbreaking in its design and function, the “pew-less” chapel provides easy accessibility, and offers twice weekly religious services. Membership in the chapel is optional, and all are welcome to attend services should they choose to do so.

An Experienced and Caring Staff

Our Asheville staff is dedicated to creating a fulfilling retirement lifestyle for all our residents from independent living to assisted living to skilled nursing. Deerfield's goal is to employ those who share our vision of caring and to provide them with the ongoing training and support necessary to enhance their professional skills. From one department to the next you will find a number of staff members who have worked here ten years or more - and even a few who have over twenty years of service at the Asheville campus.
